Please consider joining one of our many ministries. To join text STMARYWINMA to 84576 or visit stmaryswinchester.flocknote.com. Once you join, a notice is sent to the appropriate Ministry Coordinator.
Altar Servers are ministers of the altar who share responsibility in the celebration of the liturgies. Altar Servers are children (third grade and older) and adults who assist the celebrant at weekend Masses, as well as at Christmas and Holy Week services. New Altar Servers must attend training to learn the vocabulary and actions needed for altar serving. Ministry Coordinator: Kevin Lindmark
Members of our Catholic community are called to serve God in a special way by tending to the places where Catholics gather in our greatest act… to worship our God. The sanctuary area of the church is the most important area of the church. Here the altar, ambo, and tabernacle reside. These holy spaces host the consecrated elements and are in fact a place where the Lord is present. Considering the sacredness of the sanctuary, the Altar Guild ensures the proper levels of cleanliness and maintenance of these sacred items.
Some of the responsibilities of the Altar Guild would include, cleaning, polishing and shining the altar along with the Sacristy and storage areas behind the altar. In addition, members would ensure all vestments, altar cloths, chalices, etc. would be cleaned and properly stored as needed. Decorating the altar for the various changes in the Liturgical calendar, in particular for Advent & Christmas and Lent & Easter, would all be a part of the many responsibilities of the Guild. We hope that you will be inspired to serve on the Altar Guild.
Arimathean Society (Funerals)
The name Arimatheans comes from St. Joseph of Arimathea, who tended to our Lord after his death. At each funeral Mass, there are usually two Arimatheans who perform the following tasks:
- Light all the candles including the Paschal candle
- Assure enough seating for priests and deacons
- Prepare the gifts and the incense for Mass
- Precede the celebrant(s) with the cross and Holy Water
- Assist the celebrant as altar servers
- Serve as lector and as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, if necessary.
With each funeral Mass, Arimatheans hope to do their small part in comforting a grieving family in the example of their namesake, who must have comforted Mary with his care of the body of Jesus. Ideally, an Arimathean is someone with flexibility in their work schedule or retired, a fully initiated catholic and a desire to serve. Training is provided.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist assist with the distribution of the Lord’s Body and Blood at Mass. Requirements for this ministry are that you have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, be a practicing Catholic, and be a registered and active member of the Parish. If interested, you will be asked to meet with one of the priests to discuss the Ministry. All communications will be via email.
Lectors are entrusted with the ministry of proclaiming the Sacred Scriptures to those assembled at the weekend Masses. Individuals interested in this ministry must possess the ability to proclaim the sacred texts intelligibly and comfortably. They must also have the desire to share the Word with others and to grow in their understanding of the Scriptures. Each Lector receives a Lector Workbook with the weekly Sunday readings, helpful commentary, and pronunciation guides. Training will be provided. Ministry Coordinator: Mary Frances O’Loughlin
Serve as the music ministry at the 10:00 am Sunday Liturgy. No training is needed. Rehearsals are conducted every Sunday morning from 9:00 – 9:50 am. Seasonal rehearsals for Christmas and Easter occur on four Sunday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and immediately preceding the celebrations. Ministry Coordinator: Jane O’Keefe
Parishioners who are ushers in our parish are responsible for greeting parishioners and assisting them to their seats, especially at large Masses or on Holy Days. Ushers also take up the collection during Mass. We are looking to establish an usher or two who are in charge of each Mass each week to ensure somebody is always there to coordinate the collection. All parishioners are welcome to share in this ministry.
Disciples in Action: Parish Life
Arts & Environment
Team members serve as “beautifiers” of our worship spaces and contribute their time, style and sense of beauty into making our church represent the Liturgical seasons in accordance with church guidelines. This ministry is seasonal. Volunteers are needed to arrange flowers and plants, iron and hang banners, place items appropriate for the liturgical season or special liturgy in the worship spaces, church hall, and church entrances prior to major feasts and seasons such as Christmas and Easter. Seasonal decorating assistance is also needed at the end of the major seasons to remove and properly store items for the next year. No experience needed, just a willingness to work with others, accept direction, and be able to assist with moving, lifting and preparing items to be placed. Ministry Coordinator: Kathy McCarthy
Catholicism was never intended to be kept to oneself, but rather shared and spread to the ends of the earth. Our fellowship ministry provides opportunities for our parishioners to grow in Christian community with each other. There are groups and events for all ages and backgrounds, so don't hesitate to join up!
The Homebound/Nursing Home team consists of parish priests and parishioners who visit our homebound parishioners and those in the nursing home. Our parish priests provide Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation. Our parishioners provide compassionate listening, fellowship and pastoral support. Our team works closely with our parish priests to ensure the needs of our homebound and nursing home members of our parish are met. Ministry Coordinator: Ruth Elio
Focused on educating others on matters that affect members of the parish from conception to death. Those matters may include abortion, funding for handicap services, caring for the less fortunate and natural death. As a morally focused people we need to carefully think about these issues as we go about our daily lives. Ministry Coordinator: Ana Vazquez
St. Joseph Guild
This ministry works to enhance the beauty of our church and school campuses. This group consists of a planning committee and working team who help to identify areas of improvement and repair as well as volunteer their time and expertise to hands on projects and parish fundraising.
St. Matthew Guild (Counters)
The members of this ministry are volunteers from the parish community who meet every Tuesday at the Parish Center to count and deposit the monies collected at the weekend Masses. The Archdiocese of Boston provides guidelines, including the number of counters that must be present. In addition, the parish has well established security measures for the collection and handling of all monies before being deposited at the bank. The parish can always use additional volunteers to help with this ministry. Ministry Coordinator: Michael Fitzmaurice
