A note from Colleen C. DeBruyckere, Administrator of Religious Education

August 2020

Happy Summer,

The days have been long and hot and missing you all. As we prepare for a new school year I am hopeful and excited; and looking forward to our time together.

I believe there is a silver lining in every cloud. So far, 2020 has brought us quite the cloud cover. We have had gray days of uncertainty and loss of the old normal. It has rained sickness and worry. But it has also given us sunbeams of hope as we see a return to family-centeredness and reconnections to people and practices long forgotten in our over-filled days of the past. Although we have had the luxury of more ‘home-time’, these past months have left us yearning for ‘something’.

Why don’t we let that ‘something’ be someone? We may feel unsettled; but God doesn’t. He knows our hearts and we can trust God to lead us.

We, St. Mary Parish, care about each and every one of you and trust God’s plan. God led us last year to a new CCD program with Pflaum Gospel Weeklies. What a wonderful gift it was to see such growth in our young members and excitement in each class meeting! My greatest pleasure was hearing children of all ages sharing the same message after class; and speaking with parents who looked forward to the next Weekly for their own reading. You cannot go wrong when you follow the Word of the Lord.

We will continue using the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies this year with grades 1-8. And grades 9-11 will follow the formation program Decisions. Parents for grades 1-8 will choose whether to follow their program completely from home or as a hybrid model with a combination of home, virtual, and in-person meetings. Grades 9-11 will be a combination of home, virtual, and in-person meetings. No matter what works best for your family, you will not be alone. We will provide virtual learning lessons for all parents/guardians throughout the year.

The author, Father Van Sloun, states so beautifully, “To raise one’s child in the Catholic faith may be a responsibility that you accepted at baptism, but it is really a privilege, joy and honor. Our faith is our single greatest treasure, and to pass on the gift of faith is the greatest gift parents could ever give their child.” Amen!

We can do this! I have faith in you and in the plan that God has for us. He has promised to guide us: Psalm 32:8, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

Please register so that we may begin our work together very soon. Class days will be determined and published when the volunteer team has been assembled. Program fees will remain the same as last year: $165 (1 child family), $250 (2 children family), $300 (3 or more children family).

May God bless us as we seek the truth together and guide our families as we grow together in faith formation.
